Santee Alley Dining Guide

The Santee Alley is known for its delicious street food. From pupusas and bacon-wrapped hot dogs to fruit salads and frozen yogurt. We bring together foods and flavors from all over the world! If this is your first time visiting the alley, and you're not sure where to grab a bit let us recommend a couple spots:

Bacon-wrapped hot dogs are a must-have in the alley. You can get yours with all the toppings (onions, peppers and pico de gallo) or plain. The Alley Dog also serves Mexican, Latin American and American food. The tortillas are made by hand on the spot!

This is the perfect spot for a quick snack, especially on a hot day. They have 16 frozen yogurt flavors. This is also the only place in the alley that sells coffee.

Picante is a little hidden gem sitting overlooking the alley. Not only is it the only sit-down restaurant in the alley, it's also the only place around here with a full bar! Sit in their outdoor patio and enjoy the alley from above. And did we mention they have delicious seafood too?

Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt

We'll let you in on a little secret... We came to this place to escape the heat all summer. It's cool and refreshing, just like frozen yogurt! Tutti Frutti is a our go-to-place when we're craving a snack on the go. They have 16 "froyo" flavors, including a couple we had not seen before like Watermelon Sorbet and Soy Bean. They also have tons of toppings: fresh fruit, dried fruit, nuts and candy.  And did we mention it's a cafe too? Yep, you can get a sandwich and some coffee here too. It's our own little slice of frozen treat heaven.

The Alley Dog

Images via Alley Dog

The smell of  bacon-wrapped hot dogs has been enticing Santee Alley shoppers since 1982. That's how long The Alley Dog has been serving up LA's famous "street dogs" piled high with grilled onions, avocado, and jalapeƱos. If you're looking to satisfy your bacon-wrapped hot dog craving, we highly recommend you stop by The Alley Dog to get your fix. It's a true Santee Alley favorite!

For those of you who aren't keen on hot dogs, The Alley Dog has a wide range of options on their menu from burgers and nachos to burritos and quesadillas. We also love their snacks: raspados, fresh fruit salads, and bionicos - fruit salads served in a cup with creme.

Visit the Alley Dog at 317 E 12th Street in the Santee Alley!

Picante restaurant brings full bar to Santee Alley

Atop the crowded alleyway of Santee Alley lies a quiet, peaceful patio where on any given day a gentle breeze offers an escape from the crowded heat and a friendly waiting staff promises to keep you refreshed with the alcoholic beverage of your choice. That’s right, there’s a bar in Santee Alley.

It’s not just any bar. The full bar at Picante compliments the delicious menu of Latin-infused seafood dishes. The restaurant boasts “world famous” fish and shrimp tacos, and serves everything from Peruvian fish stew to shrimp BBQ flat bread, a house favorite. There are also a few chicken, beef and vegetarian dishes.

Upon the suggestion of our knowledgeable waiter we ordered fish tacos and the shrimp BBQ flat bread, both of which were delicious. The BBQ sauce on the flat bread is homemade and had just the right amount of spice to give the shrimp an extra kick. We received a complimentary appetizer of homemade chips with Picante’s own dipping sauce. Delish! Needless to say, we’ve found our new favorite spot in the alley.

Don’t be fooled: Go up the stairway on Olympic between Santee Street and Maple Avenue to get to Picante on the second floor.
