Get exclusive handbag designs at Halo Handbags

The bubblegum pink interior of Halo Handbags can be recognized throughout the Fashion District. The walls are lined with purses and wallets in every shape, size and color, flaunting department store names, the likes of Nicole Lee and Hananel. Style choices range from the very conservative to the very outgoing: fleur de lis, flowers, animal prints, rhinestones, studs, and designer inspired.

“What you find here, you won’t find anywhere else,” says Deivy Avila, president and founder of Halo Handbags. “We have a better selection, in terms of styles and prices.”

Halo has exclusive partnerships with handbag lines. This means even if other stores in the district carry the same brands, they won’t have the same designs. In fact, Avila is currently working on partnership with Nicole Lee, which will be available in stores by the end of May.

Halo also manufactures many of its own styles, as well as styles for national chains. Most notably, Halo partnered with bebe to manufacture the style shown at left. They have manufacturing and distributing contracts with various chain stores and handbag lines.

Avila, who grew up helping his parents sell men’s apparel in the Fashion District, knows a thing or two about handbags. His family has been doing business in the district for over 20 years, and he actually grew his business from a single handbag wall in his parent’s store. He now boasts 4 locations in the Fashion District and a new location in Montebello.

Perhaps most impressive, is that the 3-year-old handbag wholesaler, retailer, importer, and distributor, was founded in 2009, amid a national recession. Nonetheless, Halo has continued to grow. Davila reports sales have continuously gone up, so much so, he is currently looking to hire another sales associate.

The key to his success, he says, is excellent customer service and friendly, knowledgeable staff. He guarantees a good deal with a “best price” policy. Halo handbags retail from $15 to over $100 and wholesale ranges from $10 to $50. As an added benefit, wholesalers can chose from a variety of styles to meet their minimum, ideal for boutiques and smaller stores.

Insider Tip: Halo Handbags gets new inventory on a weekly basis, so merchandise is always changing.

Men's Showroom to Open on Santee Street

A sneak peak at the Planet showroom

Men’s and women’s fashion retailer Planet, located at 1340 S. Santee St., will be opening a men’s showroom in early April 2012. Planet, which originally opened as an extension of Imperial Planet on Melrose five years ago, sells men and women’s fashions for both retail and wholesale.

“We’ve noticed a need for men’s clothing in the Fashion District,” said Planet owner and designer, Jacques Artine Kevorkian. “There’s a lot of women’s apparel, but the selection for men is very limited.”

With approximately 80% of the Fashion District dedicated to women’s fashion and a growing demand for casual and contemporary menswear, Planet saw an opportunity to expand its business. The retail store is in the process of converting its back storage area into showroom space, where it will have samples for the current and upcoming seasons.

The Planet showroom will feature Spring and Fall collections.

“It’s a cash-and-carry concept similar to what’s found in the district for women’s apparel. The idea here is to always have something in-stock for buyers to purchase and take with them the same day,” said Kevorkian.

Planet carries lines designed by Kevorkian: JAK, a vintage-inspired men’s T-shirt line; Artine, a full men’s collection featuring dress shirts and blazers; and Planet, a more casual T-shirts line. According to Kevorkian, his designs can be found everywhere from department stores to high end boutiques.

“We offer higher quality at a good price point,” he says. JAK, Artine, and Planet can be purchased wholesale at a mid-price point range. Kevorkian also has a full showroom for men and women at the California Market Center.

St. Patrick's Day Outfit

Shop the look at Chocolate, 1120 S. Santee St. #E, 213-749-3596
We hit the alley today in search of an outfit for St. Patrick's Day. We wanted to stay in theme without looking too much like a leprachaun or showing too much skin, since it's suppose to be rainy and cold tomorrow. After trying on a bunch of different outfits, we finally settled on a layered look that would help keep us semi-warm, and if the sun just so happens to come out (fingers crossed) we can ditch the cardigan and still look cute. Plus, the skirt is the perfect shade of green for St. Patty's!

Shop the look:

Skirt             $12.99
Top              $19.99
Cardigan      $14.99
Belt              $14.99

Total            $62.96

Help Stop Illegal Animal Sales in the Fashion District

Report any suspicious or illegal activity to the LA Fashion District Clean & Safe Team.
They're the ones in the yellow shirts!

A message from the LA Fashion District Clean & Safe Team:
It was recently brought to our attention that some of you may have been approached by animal vendors while shopping at the Fashion District. Please do not purchase pets from illegal vendors. It is illegal to sale OR buy animals in our district. We’ve outlawed animal sales in an effort to help save and protect animals, especially baby animals that are weaned to early from their mothers.

There have been reports of “dwarf bunnies” being sold. These are not dwarf bunnies. These are baby bunnies that have been weaned too early from their mothers and are at a high risk for death. They cannot eat the carrots and lettuce in their cage, and many end up starving to death.

We are asking for everyone’s support to help spread the word and stop illegal animal vendors in our district.

If you come across animal vendors, please report them immediately to the Clean & Safe 24-hour response team by calling 213-741-2661.
